What are the Latest Breast Augmentation Techniques?
If you are planning to get a breast augmentation done, then you have several choices. These choices exist in terms of the style of the implant, the size, filler, surface, and several other factors.
Because of these reasons, it is important for you to speak to your cosmetic surgeon about the latest breast augmentation techniques and the choices that you have. This will ensure that you are able to get possible breast augmentation results.
Today, we’ll help you learn about all your choices in terms of breast augmentation techniques.
The Surface
There are often two implant surface types that are available to augmentation patients. These implant surface types are:
- Smooth
- Textured
The textured implants have small bumps on the surface while the smooth implants do not. These implants were developed in the hopes of reducing the risk of contracture, a complication that some women can develop after breast augmentation.
Most surgeons prefer smooth implants for their softer and more natural feel. You should trust the decision of your cosmetic surgeon in terms of what surface of the implant would be best for you.
Fillers
Women now have the choice of implants that are filled with either cohesive silicone gel or with saline, which is a saltwater solution. Both types of fillers have been used for several years to perform breast implantation.
The implants produced before the 1990’s had a more liquid fill in comparison to the implants that are used today, which have a gummy bear consistency. As of now, there is no evidence that exposure to silicone can cause any disease in human beings, women still prefer to get saline implants.
However, the negative side to this choice is that saline implants do not have a natural feel to them. Because of this, most cosmetic surgeons prefer the feel and texture of silicone-filled implants. This produces better results in the long run.
The Shape
Breast implants often come in two popular shapes, including teardrop and round. Round breast implants conform best to the natural shape of the breast and some women prefer those implants for more favorable results.
Teardrop or contoured implants can be a good fit for a woman who has had parts of the breast removed during some surgery previously like a mastectomy reconstruction. It should be noted that round implants can be smooth or textured while shaped implants are mainly textured.
The Placement
The placement of the implants can be made behind the breast tissue, which is also known as subglandular, or behind the pectoralis chest muscles, which is known as submuscular. Usually, around 75% of breast augmentation is done on a submuscular plane.
Studies have shown that a submuscular placement can reduce the chances for scar tissue contracture and allows for easier mammography after the surgery. Women also get better results after a submuscular placement.
However, at the same time, one should remember that this choice is best left for the surgeon to make. Because both subglandular placement, which provides better results for women with sagging, and submuscular placement have their own benefits.
The Breast Augmentation Techniques
Till now, we have talked about the different choices in terms of breast implants. Now, let’s take a closer look at the different breast augmentation techniques. These techniques are mentioned in the list given below.
- Inframammary Fold or Sub-Pectoral
This procedure involves an incision in the fold that is present under the breast. It tends to allow the surgeon more direct control over the positioning of the implant. Usually, around 70% to 80% of breast augmentations are performed using the inframammary fold.
The incision placement also ensures that minimal to no effect has on the milk-producing areas of the breast. The same incision can also be used if complications arise or additional surgeries are required.
It should be noted that inframammary fold augmentation works well for older patients or mothers. This is because age and pregnancy allow for a natural amount of sag in the breast. This natural sag ensures that the surgical incisions are well hidden. In the case of young women, thin women, or women who have not had any children yet, there might be a slightly visible scar due to this procedure.
- Trans-Axillary
During this procedure, an incision is made in the armpit, which is also known as the axilla. It is used to insert an implant either above or below the muscle. Some surgeons prefer to use an endoscope to help them complete the surgery.
It should be noted that around 10% of breast augmentations are done through this technique. This technique leaves no scar on the breast itself. However, a potential disadvantage is that the positioning of the breast implant becomes a little more difficult.
- Peri-Aeriolar
In this procedure, an incision is made around the nipple-areolar complex. The scar tends to blend into the edge of the areola. Women who get breast augmentation done through this technique can experience some nipple sensations after the surgery. This method is often preferred for women who have very small breasts or no folds under their breasts.
- Trans Umbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA)
This is a newer technique of performing breast augmentation. In this technique, an incision is made through the belly button. An endoscope is tunneled through the incision to a pocket under the breast. The implant is then inserted through this tunnel and inflated with saline.
It should be noted that the TUBA technique is only available for subglandular saline implants. If there is any complication during the procedure, then the patient might require an additional incision near the breast. Because of this, most surgeons don’t usually recommend the TUBA approach.
